TWO more strong earthquakes have jolted the Indonesian island of Lombok, causing landslides and damaging buildings, as it tries to recover from a quake earlier this month that killed 460 people.

The US Geological Survey measured the first quake at magnitude 6.3 and a depth of four miles. The following one was a magnitude 6.9 and a depth of 12 miles, equalling the initial fatal quake of August 5.

A reporter on Lombok said the first tremor caused landslides on Mount Rinjani and panic in villages.

Video shot by the Indonesian Red Cross showed huge clouds of dust billowing from the slopes.

The first quake caused damage to buildings in Sembalun subdistrict, including a community hall that collapsed. National Disaster Mitigation Agency spokesman Sutopo Purwo Nugroho said homes and a mosque were also damaged.

He added so far there have been no reports of fatalities but information is being collected.

A magnitude 7.0 quake on August 5 killed 460 people, damaged tens of thousands of homes and displaced thousands of people.
