A CONCERT is being held tomorrow night to help fund a bid to preserve the cottage where Scots poet Hugh MacDiarmid lived.
Charity MacDiarmid’s Brownsbank, which has owned the cottage near Biggar, South Lanarkshire, since 2015, is behind the event.
MacDiarmid lived in the cottage from 1952 until his death in 1978. It remained the home of his wife Valda until her death in 1989. Biggar Museum Trust took over the cottage in the early 1990s and conserved the contents. It was used as a home for writers in residence until 2012.
The concert is being held at the Corn Exchange, Biggar, at 7.30pm. It includes musicians Aidan O’Rourke and Kit Downes; author and former Brownsbank fellow James Robertson; pupils from Biggar Hugh School and Professor Alan Riach of Glasgow University.
