THE premier of the upcoming Netflix feature film about Robert the Bruce is to be attended by Hollywood star Chris Pine.

The man who plays the historical Scottish monarch, and who is best known as Captain James T Kirk in the rebooted Star Trek franchise, will be joined by director David Mackenzie at next week’s event at the Vue Cinema in the Omni Centre in the centre of Edinburgh.

Also in attendance a week tomorrow will be Aaron Taylor-Johnson, who made his name in the movie adaptation of comic Kick-Ass, who plays Sir James Douglas in Outlaw King.

The film tells the untold, true story of Robert the Bruce who transforms from defeated nobleman to outlaw hero during the oppressive occupation of medieval Scotland by Edward I of England.

Despite grave consequences, Robert seizes the Scottish crown and rallies an impassioned group of men to fight back against the mighty army of the tyrannical King and his volatile son, the Prince of Wales.

It was filmed at several locations across Scotland, including Glencoe, Glasgow Cathedral, Linlithgow Palace, Blackness Castle, Craigmillar in Edinburgh, and Doune Castle.

A one-minute teaser trailer was released in August, giving viewers a taste of the battles, politics and violence that will be on display.

The production premiered at last month’s Toronto International Film Festival and will screened in selected cinemas from Friday October 19. The film will then become available on Netflix from next month.

Culture Secretary Fiona Hyslop previously said that Outlaw King will display the nation’s “rich history, stunning locations and creativity to the world”.

Creative Scotland has dubbed it the largest of its kind to be made in the country and funded the project to the tune of

£1 million through public funds. The production is believed to have generated £17.5m for the economy in return.
