SPANISH vice-president Carmen Calvo has triggered a “fake news” storm after she denied that Scotland’s 2014 independence referendum took place.

Calvo, a member of Spanish PM Pedro Sanchez’s Socialist Party, speaking on Catalan radio station RAC1, said the indyref only happened because then PM David Cameron “lost control of the situation”.

She said: “The thing is self-determination is not recognised in any democracy… Well in Scotland there was not an agreed upon referendum.

“Cameron, who is probably not going to be ranked among the best European leaders, not only did he lose control of this situation, he lost control of an even bigger one, because right now they’re negotiating Brexit.”

She added: “There is nothing more democracy or democratic than agreeing upon a rule and nobody breaking it.”

Calvo’s remarks were ridiculed on social media and Catalan President Quim Torra sent her a copy of the Referendum Bill, adding: “Dear Vice President of Spain, I am pleased to attach the document by which the United Kingdom and Scotland agreed to a referendum on independence. Cordially.”

She added: “There is nothing more democracy or democratic than agreeing upon a rule and nobody breaking it.”

The agreement on a referendum in Scotland, which Calvo denied existed, was signed by then David Cameron, Alex Salmond, Michael Moore and Nicola Sturgeon.
