A DEMONSTRATION in support of Scottish independence is to be held in Berlin next year.
It is being organised by Germans for Scottish Independence who held their annual Indy Action Day last weekend in Possneck, Thuringia, with Madeleine Henfling, a Green member of the state parliament, as guest of honour.
She was one of 50 European politicians who signed an open letter to the Scottish Government in 2017 declaring their support for retaining Scotland’s access to the single market, or alternatively to accept an independent Scotland as a full member of the European Union.
Philipp Gleising, district chair of Die Linke (Left Party), and Steve Richter, district speaker of the Greens, also gave speeches, along with Pat Lee, co-convenor of Solidarity in Scotland who was on holiday in Germany with his wife.
Musician Martina Junnemann travelled nearly 300 miles from Moers to take part in the rally and lead the group in singing independence songs.
“Germans for Scottish Independence is now active on both sides of the North Sea but compared with 80 million Germans we are still a very small group and have to concentrate on symbolic activities,” said the group’s founder Marco Gorlach.
This year the group came to Glasgow in May to take part in the All Under One Banner march.
Posters and flyers have already been printed for the Berlin event which will be held on March 16.
Why are you making commenting on The National only available to subscribers?
We know there are thousands of National readers who want to debate, argue and go back and forth in the comments section of our stories. We’ve got the most informed readers in Scotland, asking each other the big questions about the future of our country.
Unfortunately, though, these important debates are being spoiled by a vocal minority of trolls who aren’t really interested in the issues, try to derail the conversations, register under fake names, and post vile abuse.
So that’s why we’ve decided to make the ability to comment only available to our paying subscribers. That way, all the trolls who post abuse on our website will have to pay if they want to join the debate – and risk a permanent ban from the account that they subscribe with.
The conversation will go back to what it should be about – people who care passionately about the issues, but disagree constructively on what we should do about them. Let’s get that debate started!
Callum Baird, Editor of The National
