MY commitment to independence is not conditional on a future socialist utopia or right-wing jamboree but entirely on providing the people of Scotland with the choices all other independent nations enjoy on choosing their own way forward.
The Scottish people have chosen overwhelmingly to remain in the EU. That decision may well be revisited when we are independent. Until then the present spectacle of us being taken out of the EU against our will is the biggest possible argument for independence, and that is what we should focus on.
Cat Boyd details many reasons why the EU is far from perfect. I know no organisation that could not be changed and improved. However, I could fill four pages of this paper with reasons why the EU is good for Scotland, and in politics it is all about “in the balance”!
I have had this discussion with quite few people. We leave the EU (which much of the rest of the world is queuing up to deals with) and go where exactly? No answer. What the diminishing band of Brexiteers are suggesting is similar to passengers on a sinking ship deciding just to jump into the sea.

Why are you making commenting on The National only available to subscribers?
We know there are thousands of National readers who want to debate, argue and go back and forth in the comments section of our stories. We’ve got the most informed readers in Scotland, asking each other the big questions about the future of our country.
