Jamie and Jimmy’s Friday Night Feast, Channel 4, 8pm
THE first episode of Jamie Oliver and Jimmy Doherty’s latest series should be out of this world – it features Doctor Who star Jodie Whittaker. It was recently announced that this year’s time-travelling Christmas special will appear on New Year’s Day rather than December 25 in a break in tradition, but it’s bound to be worth the wait. Whittaker has her feet firmly on terra firma here, however, as she takes up residence in the boys’ cafe, which is a lot smaller than her usual Tardis home.
Britain by Boat, Channel 5, 8pm
MICHAEL Buerk and John Sergeant embark on the third leg of their sea voyage, which sees the former journalists sail around the south Cornish coast, from Fowey to Newlyn. In the historic harbour town of Fowey, the pair take part in a team-building exercise in a kayak, and end up challenging a fellow kayaker to a race. Back on board the Bonaventure, the first challenge is to leave Fowey under sail rather than using the engine.
Barbra Streisand: Becoming an Icon, BBC4, 9pm
IN 1969, the 26-year-old Barbra Streisand picked up a Best Actress Oscar for her debut movie Funny Girl, four years after she’d conquered Broadway in the stage version. As this documentary reminds us, her early achievements were all the more remarkable when you consider the future superstar’s relatively humble beginnings. The film explores her desire to escape her tough childhood in working-class Brooklyn.
Portillo’s Hidden History of Britain, C5, 9pm
MICHAEL Portillo ends his journey in Sussex at the popular seaside destination of Brighton, where he goes in search of the hidden history of this British coastal resort. The ghostly skeleton of the town’s West Pier has become one of the UK’s most well-known ruins, and Michael discovers that its extraordinary staying power is thanks to its Victorian engineering.
