GLASGOW Film Festival’s Sound and Vision strand is particularly robust this year and both opening and closing gala films are immersed in music subcultures of the 1990s.

GFF19 kicks off on February 20 with the UK premiere of Jonah Hill’s directorial debut Mid90s, a coming-of-age comedy drama centred on a group of teenage skateboarders in Los Angeles set to tracks from the era. The much-anticipated Beats, set at the height of Scotland’s rave/free party scene and shot largely in Glasgow, closes the festival on March 3.

While tickets for both galas have sold out, music lovers have another chance to spot themselves at the screening of Daydream Nation, Lance Bangs’s film of Sonic Youth performing their landmark 1988 record of the same name at the 02 ABC, the much-loved venue now set for demolition.

Stephen McRobbie of The Pastels chairs a Q&A with Bangs and drummer Steve Shelley after the screening.

Earlier, there’s Jim Galloway: A Journey Into Jazz, James Cullingham’s chronicle of the life of the Scots emigre who went on to become one of the leading saxophonists in Canada. Tickets also get you entry to see Ken Mathieson’s Classic Jazz Orchestra at The Blue Arrow after the film.

Another live event is Visitations, a night of “visual experimentation and sonic escapism” hosted by Eigg label Lost Map. Expect live sets from Monoganon and Free Love, as well as films and music from Slow Tree – the new project by British Sea Power’s Abi Fry and Neil Hamilton Wilkinson, who have recently made Eigg their home.

Two of Hollywood’s favourite leads take the stage with Alex Ross Perry’s Her Smell, which sees Elisabeth Moss star as a self-destructive rocker and Vox Lux (pictured) which stars Natalie Portman as former teen pop star Celeste.

Described by the GFF as “a provocative and essential take on 21st-century trauma”, the tragic satire features an original score by two giants of contemporary music: Scott Walker and all-conquering pop queen Sia.
