I WOULD very much like to take issue with Mr Gerry Fisher, the author of yesterday’s Long Letter, which I found most thought-provoking but reflecting a closed mind akin to that of the Little Englanders south of the Border.
I do agree that the raison d’etre of the SNP is to achieve independence for Scotland but in a modern world we just cannot sit there all alone thinking how sovereign we are. It is essential to consider how best the country can survive in this cruel, selfish world.
READ MORE: EU membership is not compatible with the SNP’s primary aim
There is no perfect solution to this problem but the EU offers the best possible answer. After Brexit some 27 countries on our doorstep will voluntarily continue to cooperate with each other under rules and regulations of which they all approve, thereby enabling us to live in peace and security and for our mutual benefit. Some people complain when the EU does not interfere in the internal affairs of member states and others say that the EU interferes too much. Surely it is better to be at the heart of international affairs where one can make an impact rather than just sitting on the sidelines criticising.

Why are you making commenting on The National only available to subscribers?
We know there are thousands of National readers who want to debate, argue and go back and forth in the comments section of our stories. We’ve got the most informed readers in Scotland, asking each other the big questions about the future of our country.
Unfortunately, though, these important debates are being spoiled by a vocal minority of trolls who aren’t really interested in the issues, try to derail the conversations, register under fake names, and post vile abuse.
So that’s why we’ve decided to make the ability to comment only available to our paying subscribers. That way, all the trolls who post abuse on our website will have to pay if they want to join the debate – and risk a permanent ban from the account that they subscribe with.
The conversation will go back to what it should be about – people who care passionately about the issues, but disagree constructively on what we should do about them. Let’s get that debate started!
