The National:
THROUGHOUT the Westminster chaos over securing a Brexit deal Remainers will no doubt have been wondering where the LibDems have been.

The so-called Remain party are nowhere to be seen

While the SNP and the Greens have been quick to stand up for Scotland, the LibDems are nowhere to be seen at this crucial time in British politics.

Current Liberal Democrat leader Vince Cable and former leader Tim Farron were both absent at a pivotal vote last summer on crucial amendments to the EU Withdrawal Bill.

And the Scottish LibDems have been just as bad from their U-turn on the parking levy earlier this month to the antics at this afternoon's party conference.

Scottish Brexit Secretary Michael Russell pointed out the lack of turnout for the conference's keynote speech.

He said: "This is all the audience the Scottish Lib Dems can muster for a much trailed keynote speech to their Spring Conference by their UK Deputy Leader who is also a Scottish MP. Even Willie Rennie must realise that for his party the game’s a bogey…"

Even the First Minister couldn't resist getting in on the act.

LibDem deputy leader Jo Swinson used her keynote address to make a pitch to the politicians who have left the Conservatives and Labour.

Swinson told them: "You are disrupting the broken political system and, as liberals, we are excited by this change.

"We share your desire to shake-up the status quo, to challenge those in power who are failing our country."

Brexit is "destroying the country" but independence would be even worse, she warned.

She said she "dreads to think" what attempting to leave the UK after 300 years would do to the country.

To sum up, she would rather be governed by Westminster's Tories and for Scotland to be taken out of the EU despite our Remain vote in the referendum.

SNP MP Angus MacNeil said: "Lib Dems preference is Tories we didn't elect governing Scotland".

With Swinson accusing others of "using Brexit to break up the UK" – a move that would see Scots actually able to stop that Brexit that they so hate – it's no wonder even LibDem members didn't want to listen to her speech.
