JOHN Swinney and his wife Elizabeth Quigley were pictured in front of Bute House for the first time after being voted in as Scotland's next first minister.

The couple were seen waving on the steps of the official residence of the first minister in Edinburgh as they stood with arms linked.

Swinney had been voted as Scotland’s next first minister earlier the same day at the Scottish Parliament by MSPs.

Speaking in parliament he offered his “eternal gratitude” to his wife for the “sacrifices she is prepared to make to enable her husband to serve our country as first minister”.

The couple married in 2003 and were seen smiling outside the Bute House, which is located in  Charlotte Square, shortly after Swinney's acceptance speech. 

This is Swinney’s second stint as party leader as he led the SNP between 2000 and 2004.

Bute House first opened its doors in 1792 and is the meeting place of the Scottish Cabinet and the venue for official functions including meetings, receptions, lunches, and dinners.
